Manufacturers – how to protect workers from airborne hazards

Blog 2 Jasun pic Oct 2025

Every year, thousands of UK workers develop serious illnesses – including lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer – due to exposure to airborne contaminants in the workplace according to the British Safety Council.

These risks are especially high in industries where materials are processed, heated or handled, such as welding, baking, woodworking and metalworking.

Airborne hazards can cause deaths

Airborne hazards like dust, fumes and vapours may be invisible, but their impact is devastating. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that around 13,000 deaths annually in Great Britain are linked to past exposure to workplace chemicals and dust.

Substances such as welding fumes, flour dust and metalworking fluids contain toxic compounds that can cause irreversible damage to the lungs and other organs.

Protect your team

If you’re an employer in manufacturing or any sector where materials are transformed, you have a legal and moral duty to protect your team.

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, employers must either prevent exposure or adequately control it.

Effective air filtration

This includes installing effective air filtration systems, conducting regular air quality monitoring and providing appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

Air filtration systems are one of the most effective engineering controls.

Remove harmful particles

They remove harmful particles from the air before they can be inhaled, reducing the risk of long-term illness and improving overall workplace safety. Clean air also boosts productivity, reduces absenteeism, and enhances employee morale.

Don’t endanger lives

Neglecting air quality not only endangers lives – it can lead to hefty fines and reputational damage. Whether you run a bakery or a fabrication shop, investing in air filtration is essential. Protect your people, your business and your future by making clean air a priority.
